“I want you to help me do better. I want to improve my soils.” This was farmer Carl Frase’s recent request of Million Acre Challenge staff. Join us on March 8, 12-12:30 PM to learn alongside Carl during this month’s Soil Health to Go! Guided by Shawn Smith, District Manager for Talbot Soil Conservation District, we’ll talk with Carl about diversifying cover crops, adding a hay rotation, and other accessible state and federal programs aimed at improving soil health. A second-generation farmer, Carl is interested in doing more to steward his land. This FREE lunch & learn finds him at the beginning of that exploration.
In addition to some limited acreage in corn and soybeans, Carl’s land is rented to Black Gold Farms for growing white potatoes. Carl’s agreement with Black Gold stipulates that they take care of preparing the ground, maintaining the growth of the crop, and the final harvest, while he handles the season-long irrigation needs. Carl says, “They’re usually on the land from March through August. After they’re out, I can come in with cover crops in the fall.”
Like many farmers, Carl is interested in improving soil health but also wants to consider state and federal cost-share opportunities that may fit with his operation. Shawn Smith and MAC staff will help identify available options suitable for Carl, while also featuring programs that could benefit farmers across the region. Grab your lunch and join us for this interactive half hour!
